Seattle’s Lincoln Park

Growing up in West Seattle, I have spent quite a bit of time at Lincoln Park. Our school went twice a year for a day of playing at the beach and swimming at Colman Pool. When I was older, I brought the children that I nannied for there almost every day in the summer. Walking, biking, swimming, nature, and people watching – this is truly one of the best parks in the city.

And don’t just take my word for it – blogs, moms’ groups, bird-watching societies, they all agree that Lincoln Park is a great open space to immerse yourself in natural beauty and wonder, and it offers so many activities for the entire family. Seattle’s Lincoln Park

Awe-Inspiring Outdoor Activities

Lincoln Park is the outdoor pride and joy of West Seattle and covers 135-acres of ground beginning at 8011 Fauntleroy Way S.W. This massive space dedicated to fun and recreation has earned the title as one of the city’s largest parks and is well-loved by visitors and locals alike. There are a wide variety of activities to choose from when you plan a stop at Lincoln Park. The park offers stunning views of the nearby ferry terminal and Puget Sound while providing outdoor enthusiasts with over four miles of paved paths dedicated to walkers and an additional four miles of path exclusively for biking. Picnic shelters and tables dot the expansive green spaces and make this a wonderful and family-friendly place to spend an afternoon.

Colman Pool

When you’re here with little ones in the summer months, you’ll want to be sure to take advantage of a dip in the water at Colman pool. The pool is a 50-meter, 8 lane Olympic size pool that’s kept at a comfy 85 degrees, and it’s one of the only saltwater pools in the city. There is an adjoining bathhouse for showering and changing as well. The facility offers swimming lessons, has a giant tube slide, and has special events all summer long. Looking for an awesome space for your child’s birthday party? Win parent of the year when you rent the pool!

Playtime

Once you’ve had your fill of swimming and it’s time to play, make your way to the north end of the park where a large playground, treehouse and even a cable ride are waiting to keep the kids entertained! There is a large wading pool at the North end of the park, it’s open starting June 27th and is filled from 11am – 8pm. It’s a great place for late afternoon play dates, it’s sunny and has lots of benches and picnic tables for the adults to hang out on.

A large variety of options

Those who prefer to spend the day observing the world around them will love the fact that Lincoln Park is home to a variety of species of birds that are easily spotted from this space. Additionally, the city regularly hosts programs that introduce the fundamentals of hiking, boating and sailing. No matter what type of activity sparks your interest, there’s always something to see, learn and do at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

A Sensational Seattle Stay

June Events in Seattle!

It’s almost summer!! The weather is getting consistently nicer, the flowers are blooming, and the trees are making the hardscapes of the city softer. June brings us Father’s Day, the tail-end of SIFF, the Rock-n-roll Marathon and raps up with Pride!

Let’s start with Dad. Indoors, outdoors, music, sports, food, drink….no matter what he is interested in, there are tons of options for celebrating his special day. Why not schedule a trip on the water that includes food and drinks? Argosy Cruises and Let’s Go Sailing offer day and evening trips around both Lake Washington and Elliott Bay.

If sports are his thing, the Mariners and Sounders are still keeping Seattle Playoff hopes alive, and you won’t want to miss seeing a game at T-Mobile Park or CenturyLink Field. Our sports venues offer some really great food and drink options or stick to tradition and buy your old man a hot dog and beer!

SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) runs through June 9th. Known as America’s largest film festival, there are tons of premiers, talks by directors, and chances to meet the actors. And the next week brings us Best of SIFF at Uptown Cinemas, watch the films that were award winners and audience favorites.

There are more festivals in June than you can shake a stick at – literally every weekend boasts at least three or four fairs, runs, tastings…everything from the Bacon Eggs and Kegs Boozy Brunch at CenturyLink Field to the Greenwood Car Show. Our friends at Events12.com have the best list of all the great things to do in and around the city, check it out!

And let’s not forget the biggest part of June festivals: Solstice and Pride! While there are many small, local neighborhood events, by far the biggest are the Freemont Solstice Parade on the 22nd, the Freemont Fair on the 22nd and 23rd, PrideFest Capitol Hill on the 29th, and the Seattle Pride Parade and PrideFest on the 30th. All three give you a chance to eat, drink, shop, and bring out your inner diva – you know you want to pull that feather boa out and dance the night away!

Since you’ll spend your days doing a lot of walking (we suggest a good pair of walking shoes!) why not stay in a luxury unit that offers a warm pool to stretch those tired muscles in? Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals offers units that have not only indoor pools, but roof-top decks for relaxing on after a long day of adventuring. Give us a call and our friendly and knowledgeable staff can find the perfect vacation rental for your visit!

Spending Memorial Day in Seattle

What do you think of when you hear Memorial Day? A backyard or beach BBQ with friends, a parade through the middle of town, or maybe placing flags at the graves of those who gave their lives for us? My family is military, and we did a little of all three every year. Mom would get us dressed early, and we’d go to our local church or American Legion hall and have a pancake breakfast and hang out with the vets and listen to their stories. Depending on the weather (ok, let’s be honest – we BBQ regardless of the weather here in Seattle…) we’d have a BBQ with some of Dad’s buddies, watch the parade, and end it with the traditional spaghetti dinner to raise money for veteran’s services. It was a great way to grow up appreciating the men and women in our armed forces, their experiences, and what they chose to do with their lives.

Regardless of your upbringing or thoughts on military, I guarantee you’ll be thrilled with the vast array of events and ceremonies held in honor of this important holiday in and around the city. Whether you’re looking for time spent with family or hoping to participate in a military ceremony that honors our fallen comrades, Seattle offers up options that speak to every traveler’s intent. Here are a few you won’t want to miss out on while you’re here.

A Meaningful Memorial Day Ceremony

The Seattle Museum of Flight offers free admission to veterans who present an ID during the entirety of Memorial Day weekend. The celebration of honor culminates in a moving ceremony that takes place at 11:00 am on Memorial Day and includes fly-overs at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park. A pinning ceremony follows in combination with a color guard presentation. The Boeing Performance Concert Band is also on hand with a special musical performance.

Enjoy the Jazz Festival

If a Memorial Day weekend just wouldn’t be complete with a musical side note, a stop at the annual Jazz Festival should be at the top of your itinerary. This four-day festival highlights both well-known artists as well as a variety of aspiring hopefuls that are looking for a stage to highlight their talent. Performances range from blues to jazz and are scattered throughout the city with many performances happening at 8310 Greenwood Avenue N. Guests can purchase tickets for a single day experience or tickets for every day the festival is in town.

Take Time to Head to Tankfest Northwest

In nearby Everett, Tankfest Northwest takes to its annual stage at the Flying Heritage and Combat Museum. Located at 3407 109th Street SW, Tankfest is a family-friendly event that invites guests to come and experience displays that showcase military tanks, artillery, and vehicles. Guests will be thrilled with the many military vehicle demonstrations that are done on-site during Tankfest Northwest. In addition to the displays, guests can enjoy bouncy houses, face painting and a variety of food vendors ready to curb any craving that might arise. The festival includes a scavenger hunt for visitors of all ages as well as opportunities to take part in remote control tank experiences. From vintage planes to modern marvels, Tankfest Northwest is a wonderful time to enjoy a variety of military wonders. Trust me, this is worth renting a car for the day to participate in!

Seattle’s Museum of Flight

The Museum of Flight

You can’t grow up in Seattle and not have been to the Museum of Flight. Every school goes at least once a year, seniors groups have monthly tours, and it’s a staple of high school and college engineering programs. My dad worked for the Boeing Company when I was a kid, and we went 5 or 6 times a year for tours of new exhibits or planes, and once or twice a year for an evening employees-only party. (If you want a truly unique venue for an event, this is a place you should seriously consider!) Even if planes aren’t your thing, I promise you will find something interesting to take away from your visit, even if it’s just that you got to see an old Air Force One, or watched a short film about space travel in the 3D theater.

Our History in Aviation

The Emerald City has long been home to Boeing and prides itself on a history of innovation in aviation that has transformed the field in the past several decades. And even though Boeing HQ is no longer here, it’s still a major source of employment – with over 80,000 people working in the factories, hangers, and providing engineering and admin services. Visitors to Seattle who are looking for an immersive experience into the city’s incredible role in aviation will want to make time to visit The Museum of Flight.

Looking Upwards

Located at 9404 E. Marginal Way, Seattle’s Museum of Flight has earned the title as the largest nonprofit air and space museum on the planet that retains independent status. The museum was started in 1965 by the Pacific Northwest Aviation Historical Foundation. This group of dedicated aviation enthusiasts recognized the importance of saving, preserving and displaying artifacts from the aviation industry that showed progress and demonstrated the importance to the public. With this mission of education firmly in place, the museum was built on an old Boeing company site in 1983 and has remained there ever since.

What to Expect During a Visit

A trip to the Museum of Flight is an interactive, engaging and insightful experience. A combination of over 175 aircraft, including spacecraft, are on display for visitors to explore. Beyond this, thousands of artifacts are on display including photographs, specialized exhibits and a library dedicated to information relevant to the field and history of aviation. When you visit, you’ll have a chance to wander the aviation pavilion for an up-close look at planes that have graced the skies through history.

Beginning April 13th, and running through September 2nd, is the Destination Moon: the Apollo 11 Mission exhibit. It is part of the National Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian US tour, and this is its only West Coast stop, and the final stop of the two year special exhibition. With the 50th anniversary of the moon landing this summer, there are special events planned for the entire family including a playground with a full-sized, hands-on command module, the actual Columbia command module from the Apollo 11 mission, Yuri’s Night Out (the museum turns into a dance club!) on April 12th, and over 20 one-of-a-kind artifacts from the Smithsonian, NASA, and the museums’ own Russian additions.

Another unique program for the museum is Project Welcome Home, dedicated to the veterans and aircraft lost in the Vietnam War. They have restored a Boeing B52-Stratofortress 59-2584 Midnight Express and placed it in a specially designed park at the west side of the campus. The park opens on May 25th.

If you’re in the mood for an even more engaging experience, hop in the pilot flight simulator and see what it takes to maneuver aircraft on your own. A Museum of Flight visit also highlights the wonder of the cosmos and provides guests with a chance to experience space with a showing at the on-site 3D movie theater. Shuttle training tours let guests step into a space shuttle pod and get a sense for what it might feel like to live above the atmosphere and among the stars. Whether you’re here to pursue a passion for aviation or are hoping for some insight into the world of astronomy, there’s something for every enthusiast that looks to the sky for motivation at the Museum of Flight.

Celebrating Mom!

Mother’s Day in Seattle

Ah, Mother’s Day. The day set aside for everyone to honor the women who have raised you – mom, grandma, auntie, it doesn’t matter if she gave birth to you or not.  In our house, it was the day dad woke us up early (and I’m sure mom too, telling us to be quiet) to destroy mom’s kitchen with breakfast that only we liked to eat….and (mostly) not spilling all of it going upstairs to serve it to her in bed. I always liked picking out pretty flowers and seeing how much she loved them (sometimes pretend, sometimes not). Every family does it a little differently, but if you are looking for that perfect place to take mom on Mother’s Day that combines the best of relaxation, pampering, and scenery, you don’t need to look much further than the many options available in our great city. Especially downtown! While our dynamic corner of the earth is great for a visit any time of year, it’s a spectacular option on Mother’s Day as the city comes to life with opportunities to show mom how much you love her in style.

Book a Brunch Cruise

Seattle is often best appreciated from the water, and what could be better than giving your mom a chance to take in the sights while enjoying something savory too? Waterways Cruises and Events hosts a Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise that departs from Lake Union at 11:00 am and comes complete with a private table, decadent buffet with Pacific Northwest fare highlighted as well as a rose for every mother onboard. Champagne is readily available as well as coffee and tea depending on mom’s preference. Take time to admire the skyline and sip the afternoon away when you decide to celebrate mom by taking to the waves.

Take a Mother’s Day Train Ride

If your mom is someone who prefers time on land as opposed to heading out to sea, opt for a Mother’s Day train ride organized by the Northwest Railway Museum. Mom rides for free when you bring her on this 70-minute experience across the beautiful Seattle countryside. Scenic views and a leisurely excursion provide the relaxed atmosphere she craves with the quality family-time she deserves. Bring the entire family along for this fun Mother’s Day ride.

Give Her the Gift of Laughter

Take a humorous angle on celebrating Mother’s Day by treating your mom to an improv comedy show at the Gum Wall in Pike Place Market. Hosted by Unexpected Productions, moms local to or visiting Seattle are invited to attend this laughter-filled event for only $5 on Mother’s Day. Innovative humor and a fun and comfortable setting make this a show your mom won’t want to miss out on when you’re in town. The show runs from May 11th through May 12th from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. General admission tickets range from $12 to $14.

Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival

One of the great things about Seattle is all of the green spaces – we have so many parks, gardens, and greenbelts, I guarantee there is one within walking distance from wherever you might be right now! Some of the most beautiful spaces, in my opinion anyways, are the areas with cherry trees. This time of year, they are in full bloom and so beautiful. While there are several park sporting the happy pink blossoms, the best place to experience them is at the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Seattle Center.

Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival April 26-28

Seattle is a city of diverse roots, vibrant cultures and a vast array of reasons to celebrate. While it’s an amazing city to visit year-round in the name of nature, entertainment and the creative arts, a trip in the spring is bound to bring you to the Emerald City just in time to celebrate the Cherry Blossom and Japanese Culture Festival. This lively event is one you won’t want to miss while you’re here.

A Festival of Tradition

Hosted April 26 through April 28 at the Fisher Pavilion, the Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival is an event built on more than 40 years of tradition. In commemoration of the nation’s bicentennial, Prime Minister Takeo Miki of Japan gifted the city of Seattle with 1,000 cherry trees. In honor of this gift, the city of Seattle began hosting the Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival to commemorate this gesture of inter-cultural friendship as well as celebrate the beauty of the blossoms.

Throughout the course of the festival, guests can not only admire the blooms but are introduced to some of the most traditional and breathtaking traditions of Japanese culture. Traditional arts, activities, games, and food are on-hand throughout the festival as a means of providing guests with an interactive approach to learning the customs of Japanese culture. A variety of live performances including drumming and dance provide a stunning visual of elegance. Today, the festival retains the title of the first of its kind to be held continuously at the Seattle Center.

Festival Highlights

While the Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival continually proves to be a meaningful and exciting event in the city of Seattle, there are a few activities that find their way to the top of the must-try list for guests. Among them, the art of Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy, tends to be a fan-favorite at this festival. Guest are invited to join experts at the table and try their hand at this impressive and intricate art form. A brush and ink send guests on a journey to learning a technique that has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries. Guests looking to plan their weekend will want to note that the festival runs from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday, leaving plenty of time to taste, play and explore your way through this intriguing event.

4/20 in Seattle!

Written by Daniel Pacheco

Seattle has always been a fairly marijuana friendly city, but with the unofficial 4/20 holiday approaching you can expect slightly hazier and cloudier weather.  If you have partaken of marijuana before, starred in a Cheech and Chong movie, hated the devil’s lettuce, always been curious, or did a Bill Clinton and “didn’t inhale” that one time in college, hopefully you will learn something new or helpful.

While marijuana is still illegal federally, the government has allowed states to pass their own laws regarding its use. Keep in mind that National Parks are federal land so marijuana is banned completely in those areas. Different forms of medical marijuana have been legal in Washington state since the 1990s and in 2012 recreational marijuana was legalized. In the summer of 2014 recreational marijuana stores officially opened for business in Washington and have since made over 3 billion dollars in sales and over 1 billion dollars in tax revenue.

As with alcohol consumption, there are a few rules and laws to follow when it comes to recreational marijuana usage. You don’t need to be a Washington resident, but you will need a driver license or passport to show that you are at least 21 years old. You are allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of usable marijuana (the plant form people typically call “weed”), smoking paraphernalia, 16 ounces of solid marijuana infused products (cookies, brownies, etc), or 72 ounces of marijuana infused liquids (lotions, etc.). You will receive a receipt when purchasing products and it’s best to keep that with your goods as proof that it was purchased at a licensed retailer.  You must be 21 to purchase or possess marijuana, you can not drive and consume marijuana, you can still get a DUI for driving while “stoned”.

The 3 most common products you will see people using are “flower” which is the term used for plant material, vape cartridges which turn marijuana infused oil into vapor like an electronic cigarette, and edibles which are different types of food infused with marijuana. The law states that you may not consume marijuana in public view, and almost all hotels and vacation rentals do not allow smoking in their properties, so your best bet would be to try an edible.

If you haven’t tried marijuana before, think of it as drinking for the first time. Drinking an entire bottle of vodka and then hitting the town would be a terrible idea. Similarly, smoking or eating a bunch of marijuana products is a terrible idea. With edibles, 10mg is the most common standard serving size you will see. If you have never had marijuana, or if you have smoked but never tried an edible, playing it safe is the way to go. Eat half of a serving, wait 60-90 minutes, see how you feel, and use that to gauge whether or not you should eat the other half.

If all of this sounds extremely overwhelming or intimidating I have some great advice….just ask questions. The list of recreational stores below all employ extremely helpful staff who can answer any questions you may have and guide you in the right direction.

A Guide to Farmers Markets in Seattle

Written by Nina Holmstrom

When I travel, I love to try new food and restaurants, something I wouldn’t (or couldn’t) get at home, with the added bonus of no dishes! But sometimes it’s nice to have a home cooked a meal in your comfy pj’s after a day out exploring a new place. At home, many of us already shop at a local farmers market, why not when you’re on vacation? April Events Calendar!

April in Seattle. The sun is coming out, the flowers and trees are starting to bud and the city parks are bustling with people. You know it’s true spring in Seattle when you see its citizens outside in 50 degree weather in shorts and tees….if you’re not from here, you won’t understand. If you’re visiting us in April, you have so many choices of things to do – even events that are scheduled outside! One of the biggest events of April isn’t exactly in the city, but is definitely worth renting a car for the day: the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

The Skagit Valley is located roughly 70 miles north of Seattle, about an hour and a half drive during the week. The festival kicks off on April 1st and runs through the end of the month. There is a downloadable guide and driving map on their website, as well as information about the participating farms and other events that go along with it like the street fair in Mt. Vernon and the Parade in LaConner.

If pretty flowers aren’t your thing, there’s plenty to see closer to home. How about sports? The Seattle Sounders FC have some really exciting matches this month, hosting Real Salt Lake on the 6th, Toronto FC on the 13th, San Jose on the 24th, and LA FC on the 28th.  The Seattle Mariners host the Astros on the 12th – 14th, the Indians the 15th – 17th, the Rangers the 25th – 28th, and end the month with the Cubs on the 30th and May 1st.

Foodies love April, specifically Restaurant Week the 7th – 18th. There are over 165 restaurants participating, and they’re offering 3 courses for only $35! There’s also the Scotch & Beer Festival on the 19th and 20th and Argosy offers their Saturday Wine Cruise every weekend.

Theater & Arts fans have something to go see every night of the week! Highlights include The Lightning Theif at the 5th Ave Theater,  Cats at the Paramount, and the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Opera, and Seattle Symphony all have full calendars. The Seattle Center has lectures, plays, movies at the Armory and a the Cherry Blossom Festival the 26th – 28th.

Earth day is the 22nd, but in Seattle we need 3 days! The 20th – 22nd is Earth Weekend and there are many events, fairs, lectures, and educational events in every neighborhood.

And don’t forget Easter! It’s technically Sunday the 21st, but there are events happening all weekend long. The BunnyCon Bar Crawl starts at noon on the 20th, that will be some epic people watching! If you’ll be here with the kids, there are Easter Egg Hunts all over the city, and lots of special Easter menus and bruches at almost every restaurant. Why not try something different this year and check out the Easter Brunch on Blake Island. It includes an amazing buffet, Easter baskets and an egg hunt for the kids and time to check out the beach before you sail home.

Click on this link to view the entire 2019 Events Calendar and see what’s going on for your upcoming trip! Events12.com also had a great events calendar that shows fun things to do for the entire Puget Sound Region.

Let Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals help you find a luxury apartment in the heart of all the April action. From Belltown to Capitol Hill, we have something that will fit your needs. And for those of you who want to get away from it all, we have several quieter units available too. Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals, Redefining Accommodations since 2007.

Spending St. Patrick’s Day in Seattle?

St. Patrick’s Day. The celebration of red hair, green beer and tiny, brightly dressed men with corn-cob pipes. Well, at least that’s how it’s advertised. Growing up in Seattle, I tend to think of treats at the bakery with green frosting, chocolate coins and shamrocks from Seattle Chocolates and the amazing costumes from the yearly Dash. And of course, after I was of age, Irish Whiskey and Guinness at any bar you went to! You might not know this, but the Emerald City has a pretty large Irish population – actual Irish people from Ireland. And those guys know how to party! If you’ll be spending St. Pat’s with us, you might be overwhelmed with all the different events going on. Here are a few we recommend:

St. Patrick’s Day Dash

Start your St. Paddy’s Day festivities with a race for a good cause at the St. Patrick’s Day Dash. This annual event is approaching its 35thconsecutive year and supports local nonprofits. Make sure to deck yourself out in all green and meet at the Seattle Center to prepare for the race. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Dash will be held on March 17that 8:30am.

Seattle Center Festal – Irish Festival

If you are looking for more than just a party to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the Irish Festival may be perfect for you. This centerpiece focuses on Irish culture and heritage with two exciting days of live music, art exhibits, historical lessons, workshops, authentic foods, and hand-on learning for the children. This year’s event even features an all-day Irish Genealogy seminar, giving you some more perspective on your potential Irish heritage. Enjoy this all-ages event from March 17ththrough 18that the Seattle Center.

St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl Irish Stroll

The partiers at BarCrawls.com have not one, but 4 events that help you drink your way through the city! You can get a start at the Friday Irish Cheer Kick-off Party, work your way through the city with the St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl Irish Stroll 1 (Saturday 1pm to 10pm) or 2 (Sunday 1pm to 10pm), taking you to all of the popular Irish watering holes, or party the night away at the Get Shamrocked Saturday Night Party.  At the Saturday Night Party, you and your friends will be given wristbands and maps, letting you into the local establishments such as Sam’s Tavern, Lost Lake Café, and more for drink specials.

Meatless in Seattle!

Meatless in Seattle
Written By Nina M. Holmstrom (Photo Credit: Harvest Beat)

As a proud Seattle native, there is no other place in the world that I would rather call home.  I love the people, our diverse cultures and neighborhoods, the variety of architecture, our beautiful parks and infinite water views – but what I mostly love here is the food! We have abundant dining options, basically all ethnicities, countries, and regions and there is nothing I enjoy more than trying every culinary option that our lovely city has to offer. Seattle is a mecca for amazing restaurants and eateries, but where do you go when you’re looking for vegan and vegetarian menu options? Lucky you, we’ve got some fantastic suggestions!

Let’s start with the most important meal of the day, breakfast. The fine folks of Sunlight Café in the Maple Leaf/Greenlake neighborhood have been serving up delicious vegetarian fare since 1976. You can find a wide array of breakfast items on their menu including Lemon Poppy Seed Waffles, Sunlight Huevos Rancheros, Eggs and Home Fries and all their dishes can be substituted with tempeh or tofu.  Silent Heart Nest in Fremont founded by Buddhist and spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy offers a delicious assortment of vegetarian breakfast scrambles, omelets, waffles and pancakes and all can be made vegan at your request. Café Flora in the Madrona neighborhood is one of Seattle’s oldest and best-known vegetarian restaurants and offers an incredible selection of weekday breakfast options and an extensive brunch menu. Here you can find a wide selection of organic teas and juices and yes, your favorite breakfast comfort foods. With dishes like “Cajun Mushroom ‘N’ Grits”, “Green Eggs and Yam” and their biscuits with vegan country gravy (all dishes come with a seasoned tofu substitution option) you’re going to be in veggie breakfast heaven.

For a taste of international flavor, Araya’s Place in Madrona has been serving incredible vegan food for over thirty years. Thai family recipes including delicious curry, noodles, soups and stir fry’s and they also have a beautiful outdoor courtyard for dining in warmer weather and as well as reasonably priced lunch buffet. Speaking of lunch buffets, Chu Minh Tofu Deli located in the International District of Seattle is a vegetarian’s dream. Don’t be fooled by their online menu, go in person to experience their offerings which seem to change daily, and everything is plant based .. even the lobster! Another sweet spot to try in the I.D. is called The Loving Hut and offers a healthy and entirely vegan menu and fusion of Asian cuisine. From noodles, soups and salads, to a wide variety of noodles and rice dishes and even vegan cheesecake, this place has everything.

Are you hungry yet? Wait, there’s more!

Broadfork Café can be found at one of their two locations on Upper Queen Anne and the University District and offers a wide array of healthy vegan soups, salad, bowls and sandwiches, local kombucha and fresh squeezed juices. If you’re looking for an all-around breakfast, lunch and dinner spot it can be found at Wayward Vegan Café located in the Ravenna neighborhood. As far as vegan options go their menu is extensive and they even have a kid’s menu, this is a one comfort food stop for the whole family! No Bones Beach Club is in a category all its own. Once a solely operated food truck that blossomed into its brick and mortar location in Ballard serves up a fusion of dishes including Golden Beet Poke, Parsnip Crab Cakes, and Buffalo Cauliflower .. to name a few. Plum Bistro located in Capitol Hill is one of Seattle’s favorite vegan restaurants and is not to be missed. Their menu selection is exquisitely crafted and artisanal, from “Scalloped Trumpet Mushroom” appetizers or “Spicy Cajun Mac ‘N’ Yease” to “Handmade Beetroot & Ricotta Ravioli” and “Fresh Thyme Quinoa Pie”, these dishes are sure to please.  If you’re looking for something a little upscale, Harvest Beat has what you’re looking for. A beautiful and deliciously prepared farm to table five course and seasonal menu and elixir pairing will make for a fine dining experience. Be sure to make a reservation and check their website for current menu offerings.

If you’re just craving a local dive bar and think you don’t have any options, think again!  Highline Bar in Capitol Hill is not only one of the best karaoke spots on “the hill”, they also have a stellar veggie bar food menu including a “BLT” with bacon made from seitan, the “Reubender” a reuben sandwich with vegan corned beef and even “The Citizen Fish” a soy fish sandwich. The Georgetown Liquor Company or “GLC” as the locals call it is a cozy nook in the northern corner of Georgetown. In this quirky yet cozy bar you can play classic Nintendo and SEGA games for free and all their menu items are not only are vegetarian (and can be made vegan) but have hilarious Star Trek themed names. “The Picard”, a vegetarian French Dip made with field roast, is one of their most popular items but don’t expect to order a side of fries here, just a healthy mixed green salad or delicious soup of the day. While The Oak isn’t strictly vegetarian it is another hidden gem serving up some vegan bar food menu options. Located on Beacon Hill this local neighborhood spot is where you can find some great vegan burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and late-night vegetarian treats including “Curried Fried Chick Peas”, “Battered Green Beans” and a “Vegan Samosa Hand Pie”.

Craving something on the sweeter side?  With three locations throughout the city, pop into Mighty O Donuts for some of the best organic vegan donuts in town.  Salt N Straw is Seattle’s newest edition of gourmet ice cream shops and with two locations in Ballard and Capitol Hill you can find an incredible selection of seasonal flavors and many delicious vegan options. The Cookie Counter in Greenwood offers vegan ice cream scoops, sundaes and a variety of baked goods, not to mention everything is 100% gluten free. The aforementioned Plum Bistro also has a sweeter side called Sugar Plum and they are serving up decadent goodies including classic and seasonal flavors of ice cream, popsicles, milkshakes and “crunchy-gooey” cookies.

So many delicious vegetarian and vegan places to try, so little time! And since all this yummy food is going to require a few days of exploration, have the experts at Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals help you find the perfect place to rest – you’re going to need it! Our luxury units are withing walking distance of many of the area’s best eateries. So pack that overnight bag, don’t forget your stretchy pants, and we’ll see you for dinner!

March Events You Won’t Want to Miss!

March in Seattle. You might think there’s not much going on due to all of our, ahem, liquid sunshine, but you would be wrong! Seattle is full of indoor spaces that have events all year long like the CenturyLink Events Center and WA State Convention Center to name a couple of the biggest ones.

There’s also plenty happening on the Theater & Arts front: the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Opera, and Seattle Symphony all have full calendars as well as the many theaters that our city boasts. Marie, Dancing Still is at The 5th Ave Theater from March 22nd – April 14th, the Paramount has Cats from the 26th – 31st, the Moore and Neptune have something almost every night and the ACT has the Shakespearian classic Romeo and Juliet for the entire month!

The Seattle Center has lectures, plays, movies at the Armory and a couple of fun festivals including French Fest on the 24th.

Sports finally get underway in March too. The Seattle Sounders FC kick off their 2019 Season on March 2nd hosting FC Cincinnati at 7pm. And the opening day for the Seattle Mariners is Thursday the 28th against the Boston Red Sox. Everyone who shows up gets a magnetic schedule!

If you’re into food and beverage events, March does not disappoint. The Pike Place Pig Out is on the 1st, Seattle Cocktail Week is the 3rd – 10th, Taste Washington is the 28th – 31st and Argosy starts up their every Saturday Wine Cruise event on the 2nd, and it runs through October.

Let’s not forget the biggest event of all in March: St. Patrick’s Day! There’s the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dash at the Seattle Center (it’s also a costume contest), the Irish Festival at Fisher Pavilion, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown, the St. Patrick’s Day Cruise on Lakes Washington and Union, and of course way too many pub crawls, whiskey tastings and costume parties to list.

5 Reasons to #bookdirect

Ok, you’re sitting in front of your computer and trying to decide on where to stay for your upcoming vacation. And you’re going to site after site to search the ‘best deals’ and wondering if you really are saving money. Sound familiar? What if I told you that if you searched Vacation Rentals in the city you want to visit, and went to that company’s website you would find a better rate for the same room as advertised on all the big travel sites? It’s true!

This Wednesday, February 6th, is national #bookdirect day – a day when the companies competing for your business come together to educate the public on why booking direct is a better option. Here are a few reasons:

  1. The price is almost always lower. This might not ring true to you, but I assure you, it is. And the reason is because Online Travel Agencies (like Homeaway, Expedia, Air B&B, and others) charge you booking fees to use their sites. And those fees don’t go to the company they are advertising for, it goes to their bottom line. Some sites can charge as much as 25% on top of the cost of the unit….crazy, right?
  2. You will ALWAYS get better customer service. A large OTA has a call center located in a city that is most likely where you aren’t staying. So, if you have an issue, the person who answers your call may or may not be able to help you, or care about what is going on. If they don’t live where you are staying, they might not even be able to help you, especially if it’s a specific question about where you are. If you book directly with a local management company or owner, most problems will be handled quickly, and by someone who actually cares about helping you.
  3. A lot of Vacation Rentals aren’t listed on the OTA sites. Because of the cost to advertise with them, and the fees that they charge, many vacation rental owners and managers don’t list their units with them. But all owners and manager haves a website, and by searching locally for places to stay you can find them easily!
  4. You can customize your vacation with a local company. We’ve all been there – you want a vacation, but you need to stick with a very specific budget or have a special event you are traveling for. If you work with local managers and owners, they can help you find the right unit at the right price. And if you’re coming to town for an event and want to add in a few fun things while you’re there, a local will be better able to answer questions about where to go, what to do, where to eat, and how to best get there. Do you have food allergies? A local will be able to recommend stores and restaurants that meet your needs.
  5. Special needs and requests can be more easily accommodated. If you’re traveling with someone with special needs or you have specific requirements for your stay, working with a local owner or manager is easier. Locals can add personal touches and make suggestions to make sure your vacation is awesome for everyone you’re traveling with.

Have I convinced you to #bookdirect yet? How about this: here at Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals our number one priority is you, our guest. We want your stay to be the best you’ve ever had and have gone to great lengths to ensure just that. From our luxury bed and bath linens, to a kitchen stocked with everything you’d need to make an amazing meal, to the personal touches with the décor that our staff interior designer has made in each unit we manage – all of this is done with your comfort in mind. And if there is a problem, our customer service phone is answered 24 hours a day, and we will do our best to resolve it right away. And don’t just take my word for it. Visit our website, check out some of our amazing properties, and see what other guests have said. #bookdirect

The Top Four Reasons to Spend Valentine’s Day in Seattle

Remember when you were young, and Valentine’s Day meant your parent or grandparent helped you make cupcakes or cookies and you had to make sure you had something for every person in your class? And the most exciting part was wondering if your crush picked out that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle card especially for you?!? There are times when I wish things were that simple again. As an adult, this particularly odd February holiday can be stressful, for singles and couples alike. Regardless of how you feel about cupid and his arrow, our city has something for everyone – from gourmet chocolate to local wine to insect feasts that include our tiny friends in both food and beverage, (Yes, it’s a real thing! The Atlas Obscura Society Valentine’s Insect Feast is on the 14th at Darrell’s Tavern in North Seattle) if you can’t find something do to, you’re just not trying.

Seattle, Washington beckons travelers to its vibrant city limits in droves each year. While it’s an exciting place to visit year-round in the name of urban entertainment, outdoor adventure and delectable dining, February 14th transforms the Emerald City into an oasis of love and romance. It’s hard to find a better place to spend time with the one you love most with opportunities to indulge in the language of love lingering on nearly every block. Here are the top 4 reasons you’ll want to spend Valentines Day 2019 in Seattle.

The Chocolate

There’s nothing like chocolate to set a romantic scene. A stay in Seattle over Valentine’s Day is best experienced when it includes a trip to Seattle Chocolate. This combined flagship store and chocolate factory is a tasty icon of the Pacific Northwest that encourages guests to indulge in local melt-in-your mouth flavors. Pick up a variety of chocolate delights with the understanding that they are best enjoyed when shared. Take a tour of the factory to see how these delicious creations get their start, then spend time enjoying truffle bars until your heart is content. Even more, guests get to keep spreading the love well beyond Valentine’s Day with a portion of every sale going directly back to local food banks.

The Spa

While a day at the spa holds the potential to turn everyday into your best day, Valentine’s Day calls for a spa experience that brings an inclusive touch along with the luxury. Tucked inside the Fairmont Olympic Hotel is The Penelope and Beauty Bar. An ideal Valentine’s Day destination in Seattle, this spa carries some of the most exclusive brands on the market while offering up wonderful couple’s massage options. Take time to relax in style but more importantly, together when you book a session at this lovely locale. Haircare, waxing and skin treatment services are readily available for those couples looking to indulge in a day of pampering as opposed to a few hours.

The View

While any other day of the year may categorize a tourist-heavy stop as standard, visiting the top of the Seattle Space Needle on Valentine’s Day comes with an element of romance that’s hard to resist. Make your way up to the observation deck to enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding waterways from an incredible vantage point. Away from the bustling crowds below, you’ll find an intimate moment to cuddle close to the one you love and soak up a view unlike any other while you’re at it.

The Dinner

If the language of love is best spoken through delicious dining opportunities, then Seattle is the perfect place to be on Valentine’s Day. A reservation made at Cascina Spinasse is sure to inspire love and a pleased palate. This upscale restaurant complete with elegant lighting and a rustic ambiance will leave you feeling as if you’ve been swept away to the Italian countryside in no time at all. Serving up Prosciutto, Capunet and Trota in style, guests have endless opportunities to enjoy hand-made pastas alongside a meticulously curated wine list. Fashionable and flavorful, Cascina Spinasse is the ultimate Valentine’s Day destination when it comes to fine Seattle dining.

Visit Seattle’s Iconic Smith Tower

Having grown up in West Seattle, I am very familiar with the skyline of my beautiful city – I was lucky enough to live where we had a view of downtown. Over the years, I’ve watched the city mature – building taller buildings, adding attractions like the Seattle Great Wheel on the waterfront, and now the removal of the viaduct for a tunnel. But for all the change, some things have stayed comfortingly consistent; like the Smith Tower.

In 1909, Lyman Cornelius (LC) Smith came to Seattle, looking for a place to build a skyscraper. LC made his fortune selling typewriters and firearms in New York, but his wife had fallen in love with our great city on a previous trip and convinced him to build here. He purchased the land at 2nd and Yesler and began plans for a 14-story building. His son Burns suggested that he should build something much taller, to steal the title of “tallest building West of the Mississippi” from Tacoma – so he did.

Construction began in 1911 and was completed in 1914, opening to the public on July 4th.  It towered above everything around it, measuring an impressive (for that time) 469 feet, and over 4,000 Seattleites road the Otis Elevator up to the 35th floor to observe the amazing 360-degree view of the Puget Sound. Unfortunately, LC died in 1910 and did not get to see his tower. But I think he would have been proud! It kept the ‘tallest building West of the Mississippi’ title until the building of the Kansas City Power & Light Building in 1935 and remained the tallest building in Seattle (and the entire West Coast!) until the Space Needle was built in 1962.

A couple of fun facts: the architectural firm Gaggin & Gaggin from New York was selected to design LC’s tower, even though they had never worked on a building taller than 5 stories. It was their first and last skyscraper.  And in the 35-floor Observatory sits the “Wishing Chair” gifted to Smith by China’s Empress Dowager Cixi before she died in 1908. Rumor has it that if you are single and sit in it, you will be planning your wedding within a year!

The ground floor of the building has a gift shop as well as historic exhibits that tell the history of the building. At the top floor of the tower is an Observatory with an open-air observation deck and 360-degree views of downtown Seattle, the Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains. If the sky is clear, to the Southwest you will be able to see Mt. Rainier, the tallest mountain in Washington state. While up there you can enjoy craft cocktails and seasonal appetizers in the bar, and if barrel-aged liquors are your thing, they make their own in house! Sip on a classic Manhattan or Old Fashioned while learning the colorful history of Prohibition in Seattle.

The Smith Tower Observatory and bar is open Sunday – Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Thursday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – midnight. They offer two different tours, The Legends of the Smith Tower before 9 pm and Straight Up By Night from 9 pm – 11 pm. Tickets for the Legends tour are available online and are $20 for adults and $16 for Military/Student and children aged 5 – 12 years. Tickets for the later tour are $12 and can only be purchased in the Main Lobby. They also offer tickets for $10 during their Weekday Happy Hour, Tuesday – Thursday from 4 pm – 6 pm. Pro Tip: Buy your tickets for the Legends tour in the Main Lobby day of and you will pay the Locals rate of $12!

Awesome Seattle Winter Events You Didn’t Even Know You Were Missing…

I have been lucky enough to have done a lot of traveling in my life, both overseas and here in the US, and one of my favorite things to do when in a new place is to talk to a local and find out where they go for food and fun. They know all the great little places to eat and drink, the attractions that are more than just for tourists, and the best places to watch a show. Some of the most fun experiences I have had on vacation were at small, local venues, fairs and community festivals. In fact, most of the staff here at Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals have travel in common; between all of us, we’ve been not only all over the world, but visited all 50 states here at home! So, with that in mind, we decided to take our combined love of food, drink, music, sports, and festivals and make a calendar for our guests. Every month we’ve listed some of the events we think you might like to check out while here.

But winter in Seattle? Most people think of rainy, dreary days – and to be honest, there are a lot of those. But there are quite a few indoor activities to be found, there’s something for everyone. January and February are the biggest Show months: we have the NW Garden Show, the Home Show and the Boat Show just to name a few. And while major league sports aren’t huge this time of year, there are a lot of College, AAA and minor league teams playing all over the city. We have sports bars that show Soccer, Hockey and Basketball from here and abroad. And don’t forget museums, theaters, and arts performances; lines are shorter, and tickets are more readily available. Many of the vendors at the Pike Place Market are open year-round. Yes, you will need a jacket, but it’s covered so you won’t get rained on.  There are also several really amazing food and beverage festivals as well, how about the Chocolate and Bourbon festival or the Seattle Food and Wine Experience?

Please click on this link, or one of the images above, and it will take you to our Events Calendars page on our website where you can download the monthly calendar. The events listed have links to their website or where you can purchase tickets.

And if you find an event you just HAVE TO experience, why not stay with us for your visit? We have comfy, well-stocked units in the heart of downtown Seattle. Why not make life easier and stay where you can walk or Lyft to your night out? And if you have questions about other things to do or need information about anything Seattle, don’t hesitate to contact us!
