Seattle and Mary Jane

.. or What Washington State’s legal pot laws look like to the marijuana tourist.

legal pot in Seattle tourismHas Washignton State’s new pot laws got you thinking that Seattle is the paradise on Earth that deserves your attention as your next vacation nirvana?

Great, and welcome!

But before you book, please read on to understand what legal marijuana in Washington actually looks like, and what that will mean to you, as a marijuana tourist.

First off, and speaking just for Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals, ALL of our rental properties are non-smoking. That means you can’t smoke tobacco, you can’t smoke a salmon, you can’t smoke pot. Period. In any of our vacation rentals. Or in any of the common areas, such as roof top decks. Nor off your balcony. No smoking anything. Which I realize kinda sucks, especially when you take into account the second point, below, but that’s the way the cannibus-infused brownie crumbles.

The second point, smoking pot in public is not legal. Because even though Washington has legalized pot, as a general rule, Washington is also one of the hardest places in the US to smoke, like just regular tobacco. All bars, restaurants, nightclubs and within 25 feet of a public doorway are no smoking zones. So it should come as no surprise that toking up in pubic is verboten, and is a civil issue (in other words, a ticket, not an arrest). For more about that side of the issue, check out SPD’s Marijwhatnow page, a surprisingly good read about legal pot in Washington.

Lastly, buying retail pot is, as of this writing, still not happening in the State of Washington. Soon, very soon, I am sure there will be Yelp reviews and pot tours. Currently, the state has issued licenses for retail pot locations, and the most recent word from our fearless leaders is that locations should start doing business in June. Out of staters can buy pot in Washington (provided you are over the age of 21) but cannot take it home. For information about the general state of pot in Washington, check out the Seattle P-I’s Pot Blog.

All this to say, coming to Seattle purely to score some legal grass, man, is not as easy as you might think. You won’t step off the plane and be greeted by doobie filled vending machines (though I have to admit, that certainly might improve the attitude in the lines at the TSA check point). However, there is so much to do, in addition to legal marijuana, I invite you come anyway. You’ll won’t be disappointed!

Seattle’s Easter Dining Choices, and more!

Spending Easter in the city? Here are some great suggestions for Easter dinner, from casual to swank, with some traditional, some not so.

LunchBox Laboratory:   This off the charts casual eatery is running an Easter special, with a BOGO Burger of the Gods.  What is a Burger of the Gods, you ask?   As they describe it, a super-beef patty, bleu cheese crumbles, candied balsamic onions, with super gorgonzola spread. Um, can you say “delish?”

Aqua by El Gaucho:  Looking for an elegant Easter brunch?  Located on Pier 70, Aqua is convenient to all of downtown, and walking distance from our Alto, Belltown Court and MODA locations.  Easter Sunday they are offering a sneak peek of their Summer brunch menu.

Argosy Easter Brunch Cruise:  Want something quintessentially Seattle.  How about Easter brunch on the water.  This experience will have something for everyone with great views of the Seattle skyline, a delicious brunch buffe, live music.  For the little ones, there will also be kids crafts, an on-board Easter Egg Hunt  and even an Easter bunny for photos.

Urbane Seattle: Urbane utilizes regional farmers to use only the freshest, seasonal ingredients at their peak of quality. Perhaps the most traditional of the bunch, they will be serving up a tabasco-honey glazed Berkshire ham chop, spring vegetable hash and house made scones for their Easter brunch.

Il Fornaio: How does Dunguness Crab Eggs Benedict sound?  Sounds great to me!  Need I say more?

Also, on a related note, the Pike Place Market is having a Bunny Party Sunday, with activities all day long.  It gets kicked off at 10am with an egg hunt.  Also, the Children’s Museum (at the Seattle Center)will be hiding 4000 eggs amongst its displays both Saturday and Easter Sunday.  You do need to reserve a spot for the egg hunting; as you can imagine it is a popular event.

And if you still need a bunny, chocolate ones will be available at Fran’s, just south of the Pike Place Market on First and Union!

Makers and Kilts and Crepes, Oh My!

Makers and Kilts and Crepes, Oh My!

March may be traditionally the month of the Irish, but the weekend of March 22 and 23 holds more than just a pot of gold. If your Seattle vacation falls over this weekend you’re in for a real treat. If not, you may want to book an impromptu getaway now.

Seattle Maker Faire
Saturday March 22 and Sunday March 23 – 10am to 5pm at the Seattle Center
Over the past few years the charmingly mad scientists at MAKE: magazine have piqued the imagination of all ages by spawning a series of Maker Faires throughout the country. If you love science, technology, robots, or are just waiting for the hoverboard to be invented, it’s a don’t-miss event. The celebration of learning, creation, and knowledge is perfect for the whole family.

Exhibits are created by both professionals and amateurs from all around the Pacific Northwest, and hands-on participation is encouraged. While the Maker Faire is ideal for all ages, younger inventors will need supervision as some of the exhibits may have small parts or deal with concepts such as electricity. Tip: Historically Sundays are less crowded than Saturdays, allowing for more time in the workshops.

51st Annual Tartan Ball
Saturday March 22 – 7:30pm at the Puyallup Fairgrounds
A dressy affair, this is the ideal opportunity to be part of Seattle’s rich Scottish culture. Described as being like a wedding without the bride and groom, this event is a soiree worthy of royalty. With traditional music and dance featuring the Clan Gordon Pipe Band, you’ll be steeped in the ways of the Scots in no time. You don’t have to wear a kilt, but it is the perfect opportunity to don a tartan. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and tables for up to 10 people may be reserved. Come ready to imbibe, as the open bar will surely feature some of the best scotch around.

2nd Annual French Fest
Sunday March 23 – 11am to 6pm at the Seattle Center Armory
If you’re craving crepes or longing for a baguette and cheese, French Fest is just right. You’ll enjoy all things au Francais. Live music, dancing, informative seminars, and of course delicious food will all be available at this event. Entrance is free for everyone. Three Perfect Spots for Valentine’s Day

romantic seattle restaurants, seattle valentine's dayWith Valentine’s a week away, here are the Seattle Oasis Vacation Rental’s recommendations for the best romantic dinner spots in the city!

La Rustica: Northern Italian fare tucked in an out-of-the-way Alki location. It’s got the feel of “only the cool people know about this place” without the snooty. This place is cozy, with a charming ambiance and the promise of a romantic walk along the water après dinner.

Boat Street Café/Walrus & the Carpenter: Both owned by Renee Erickson, a current “hot” name on the Seattle food scene. Boat Street is “unpretentious French” with candlelight and slate on lower Queen Anne. Walrus, in Ballard, has the reputation as the best raw oyster bar in the city, and you know what they say about oysters, right?

Lark: James Beard award winning chef using locally sourced and in-season items that are at their peak of taste. They do a $95 four course dinner for the big day, but like all my other recommendations, highly recommend ANY day. You will NOT be disappointed.

There are tons of great restaurants near our vacation rentals, so if none of these appeal, please reach out to us; we love to give recommendations!!

Time to break our world record-Seattle Seahawk fans

Time to break our own World Record

The Seattle Seahawks fans have set a new noise record for loudest outdoor sports stadium, taking back a mark they achieved earlier this season.

An official from Guinness World Records recorded the crowd noise at 137.6 decibels during the Seahawks victory over the New Orleans Saints on the December 2nd game. The record came during the second quarter of Seattle’s 34-7 victory and was announced on the Seahawks Twitter page.

A known opponent for this Saturday

The Seahawks, who finished 13-3 to capture the NFC West and home-field advantage throughout the postseason, are coming off a playoff bye. The Saints, who finished 11-5 to earn the No. 6 seed in the NFC, are coming off a 26-24 victory over the Eagles in Philadelphia in a wild-card playoff game on Saturday night.

The winner of this Saturday’s divisional-round playoff game between the Seahawks and Saints advances to the NFC Championship game against the winner of Sunday’s game between the San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers.

Seattle Seahawks Gear Up for Playoffs

The Seattle Seahawks have had a great record this season, and currently stand on top of the NFC West division with a record of 14-3. December 2’s 34-7 domination of the New Orleans Saints further solidified their position at the top. This huge victory made the Seahawks the first team in the NFL to secure a spot in the playoffs this season, helped by a 14 home game win streak with Russell Wilson consistantly leading the team to victory with the help of the twelth man.

The Seahawks have shown a distinct home field advantage: they have won their last 14 games played at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. They were able to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win at home facing the Rams.

As the team continues its extremely strong season, now is the time to get tickets for their exciting playoff games. The team is expected to make a deep run in the playoffs since they have clinched home field advantage.

While the team has been preparing for the playoffs, their fans have been as well. Seahawk’s fans have been setting noise level records this year at CenturyLink Field. Back in September they set a record of 136.6 decibels in a game against San Francisco. Kansas City fans toppled that record in October, hitting 137.5 decibels. During the Monday night game against New Orleans, fans at the stadium set a new Guinness Book of World Record’s record at 137.6 decibels. What fan wouldn’t want to be a part of that?

Don’t be left out in the cold without securing accommodations ahead of time. Find a great vacation rental in the heart of Seattle when you pop in to see the Seahawks’ playoff games. Visit Seattle Oasis Vacation Rentals today to learn more.

Cheer on the Seahawks as they Prep for Playoffs

This season, the Seattle Seahawks were the first team in the NFL to secure a position in the playoffs. The Seahawks’ secured 1st Place in the NFC last Sunday, and have home field advantage on the road to the Superbowl. With homefield advantage throughout the playoffs the Seattle Seahawks are favored to win as Century Link field provides amazing home field advantage.

The team has remained extremely strong throughout the season, winning 14 of 17 games. Impressively, the team has only been defeated once at home since 2011 with Russell Wilson as Quarterback. There is no better feeling for a football fan than to be in the stadium cheering their team on to victory. Now is a great time to see a Seahawks game at CenturyLink Field in the heart of Seattle and show support for this inspiring team.

Aside from being there for a Seahawks’ playoff game, CenturyLink Field is surrounded by a number of other great Seattle attractions to visit while in town. One of the top rated things to see and do nearby is the Seattle waterfront on Elliott Bay with its shops, restaurants that feature fresh Pacific Northwest seafood, ferry rides and the Seattle Aquarium. There is also the Experience Music Project / Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame to visit as well as the historic buildings in Pioneer Square, or the unique Seattle Underground Tours. It’s a great time to take an extended stay and see all that Seattle has to offer.

Seattle Boat and Home Shows

In early 2014, exhibitors and investors alike will be gathering for Seattle’s renowned Boat and Home Shows at CenturyLink Field. These two annual events draw thousands of visitors to Seattle, seeking out the new trends and viewing all the models on exhibit.

The Boat Show, scheduled January 24 to February 2, 2014, is the largest boat show on the West Coast and brings in the top industry designers from across the nation. The show features a variety of fishing and boating seminars as well as showcasing the latest accessories and boats including yachts, cruisers, sailboats and kayaks. It’s a great opportunity for boating enthusiasts to get special deals, rebates and incentives on new boat purchases. The boat show is presented in two locations, CenturyLink Field and South Lake Union.

The Northwest’s largest consumer home show, The Seattle Home Show, will be held February 15 – 23, 2014. There will be hundreds of vendors displaying their innovations from floor to ceiling, indoors and out. There are seminars and a wine tasting along with exhibits from builders, remodelers, decorators and landscapers. The Lost Pelican New to our Belltown Court Building

A new restaurant has moved into the Belltown Court bulding, next to our favorite bakery, Macrina.  It is a southern place, really a New Orleans place, called The Lost Pelican

It first came to our attention for its excellent happy hour, which runs from 3-7pm daily.  We then noticed, when arriving in the morning, the EXCELLENT smells emiting from the space as they do their prep work in the morning.

We’ve now had the opportunity to sample a couple of items on the menu, and we are happy to recommend this new place in the Belltown neighborhood, but don’t take our word for it, they just got a very favorable write-up by the Seattle Times restaurant critic.

Lost Pelican at Seattle Oasis Vacation RentalsI found the gumbo to be very good, and most likely the source of the lovely smells in the morning.  Spicy, without being overpowering.  The BBQ Shrimp was equally yummy, enough so that you wish you could pick up the plate and lick it.

The happy hour menu is very reasonably priced, full of small plates for about $5, so you can nosh and sample fairly cheaply.  I will second the opinion of the Times’ reviewer and recommend the crawfish pasta.  Just very tasty!

My only dig to this establishment, and reason for not stopping by more often, is that is 21 and over.  For many however, that will be a plus, and for our guests without the kiddos, I highly recommend it!

In the Mood for a Ghost Tour?

seattle oasis vacation rentals, seattle vacation activitiesHalloween is getting close.  Are you a fan of Ghost Hunters? Enjoy the paranormal? Seattle has a highly regarded attraction that will be right up your alley. Our friends over at Seattle Ghost Tours have twice been named in the top ten ghost tours in the USA by tripadvisor.com, and is well worth a visit.

Seattle Ghost Tours has aspects that the believer, as well as their skeptical family members can enjoy.  This tour is rooted in Seattle’s history with basic walking tour of 75 minutes. Their excellent guides mix the right amount of spookiness.  You will visit Seattle’s first mortuary, which is now doing business as an Irish bar, as well as other spooky sites near the Pike Place Market (which, FYI, is supposedly the most haunted location in the Northwest).

They also do a “Chapel Tour” which is a more hands-on, investigative, and a little bit more scary tour. Here you enter the Butterworth Mortuary, armed with paranormal sensing gadgets and meters. Here is your chance to live out your Ghost Hunter dreams!
