Whiskey and Seattle: A Love Story
You’ll find many works of love in Seattle and residents and tourists alike will tell you of their love affair with local whiskey. The craft of distilling whiskey has grown widely recently and Seattle has taken it to heart. Seattle area distilleries are romancing locally grown grains such as barley, wheat, and rye from field to bottle.
Many Seattle distilleries offer tours and tastings, plus even give a glimpse into how the craft of distilling has and is still growing. After you sample from the source, you’ll want to seek out local bars that serve locally-distilled spirits and see how their bartenders are turning those spirits into house-made infusions and cocktails that will delight.
Here are a few distilleries to get you started on your local whiskey journey.
Fremont Mischief Distillery136 N Canal Street in SeattleMischief Distillery allows you to go behind the scenes of their spirit making with a tour of the distilling room. During the tour you will find out more about their history and the process of handcrafting their spirits. Once the tour is over, you’ll get to taste a small batch of those spirits for yourself.Westland Distillery2931 First Avenue South, Suite B in SeattleWestland Distillery offers a tour of their 13,000 square foot single malt whiskey distillery. They thoroughly explain their whiskey-making process which produces an exceptional American Single Malt Whiskey. At the end of the tour, you will enjoy a sampling of their whiskey. Tour hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11am, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm.
3-Howls Distillery426 S. Massachusetts Street, Space B in SeattleFounded in the Pacific Northwest, 3-Howls Distillery sits within a 6,000 square foot space that serves a monument to their ethic. They offer a tour of their facility that leaves you with not only a thorough understanding of their spirit-making process, but with an appreciation of why Seattle is the ideal place to produce exceptional spirits. At the end of the tour, you get a bonus sampling of their spirits.
Copperworks Distilling Company1250 Alaskan Way in SeattleAvailable for small groups, The Copperworks Distilling Company offers a tour of their facility sharing stories straight from the distiller’s mouth. On this tour you learn about distinctive distilling processes, and you can go behind the scenes to visit their stills, fermenting, and barreling areas. This tour, including a guided tasting, takes roughly one hour. Tour participants must be 16 years or older. The tour schedule is Fridays at 5pm and Saturdays at 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm.
