Spending Memorial Day in Seattle

What do you think of when you hear Memorial Day? A backyard or beach BBQ with friends, a parade through the middle of town, or maybe placing flags at the graves of those who gave their lives for us? My family is military, and we did a little of all three every year. Mom would get us dressed early, and we’d go to our local church or American Legion hall and have a pancake breakfast and hang out with the vets and listen to their stories. Depending on the weather (ok, let’s be honest – we BBQ regardless of the weather here in Seattle…) we’d have a BBQ with some of Dad’s buddies, watch the parade, and end it with the traditional spaghetti dinner to raise money for veteran’s services. It was a great way to grow up appreciating the men and women in our armed forces, their experiences, and what they chose to do with their lives.

Regardless of your upbringing or thoughts on military, I guarantee you’ll be thrilled with the vast array of events and ceremonies held in honor of this important holiday in and around the city. Whether you’re looking for time spent with family or hoping to participate in a military ceremony that honors our fallen comrades, Seattle offers up options that speak to every traveler’s intent. Here are a few you won’t want to miss out on while you’re here.

A Meaningful Memorial Day Ceremony

The Seattle Museum of Flight offers free admission to veterans who present an ID during the entirety of Memorial Day weekend. The celebration of honor culminates in a moving ceremony that takes place at 11:00 am on Memorial Day and includes fly-overs at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park. A pinning ceremony follows in combination with a color guard presentation. The Boeing Performance Concert Band is also on hand with a special musical performance.

Enjoy the Jazz Festival

If a Memorial Day weekend just wouldn’t be complete with a musical side note, a stop at the annual Jazz Festival should be at the top of your itinerary. This four-day festival highlights both well-known artists as well as a variety of aspiring hopefuls that are looking for a stage to highlight their talent. Performances range from blues to jazz and are scattered throughout the city with many performances happening at 8310 Greenwood Avenue N. Guests can purchase tickets for a single day experience or tickets for every day the festival is in town.

Take Time to Head to Tankfest Northwest

In nearby Everett, Tankfest Northwest takes to its annual stage at the Flying Heritage and Combat Museum. Located at 3407 109th Street SW, Tankfest is a family-friendly event that invites guests to come and experience displays that showcase military tanks, artillery, and vehicles. Guests will be thrilled with the many military vehicle demonstrations that are done on-site during Tankfest Northwest. In addition to the displays, guests can enjoy bouncy houses, face painting and a variety of food vendors ready to curb any craving that might arise. The festival includes a scavenger hunt for visitors of all ages as well as opportunities to take part in remote control tank experiences. From vintage planes to modern marvels, Tankfest Northwest is a wonderful time to enjoy a variety of military wonders. Trust me, this is worth renting a car for the day to participate in!
