Seattle Speakeasies

Seattle Speakeasies

Cool, retro, and a little subversive, the speakeasy is an exclusive getaway catering to those who like well-crafted cocktails, thoughtful food, and a sense of intrigue. Popular during the prohibition years, speakeasies provided a place for folks to enjoy their (at the time) illegal booze away from the prying eyes of the Feds.

For nostalgia’s sake some speakeasies can be a challenge to find. Places use social media to reveal their location, operation times, menus, and even passwords needed to gain entry. Most stay true to the prohibition template by eliminating any front signage.

Typically these establishments are cozy, intimate spots designed to give a throwback experience to the customer. Craft and prohibition era cocktails are standard, while many offer select menus dedicated to the whims of the owner or guest chef.

Reservations are always welcome and are often required due to the limited size and seating of the establishment. Text or online reservations are usually all you’ll need to enjoy an evening of handcrafted food and drinks in an exclusive environment.

During your stay at your vacation rental home in Seattle, here are a few places to check out for a speakeasy experience. The others, you’ll just have to discover for yourself!

Knee High Stocking Co.
1356 E. Olive Way Seattle WA, 98122
Text in your reservation and enjoy a cozy place that caters to foodies and craft cocktail lovers. A delicious menu includes lamb mini burgers, baked goat cheese, spiced tots, spicy mac and cheese, and fish tacos. You’ll get handcrafted cocktails and a variety of absinthe drinks, because a trip to the Emerald City wouldn’t be complete without a visit from the green fairy.

Needle and Thread
1406 12th Ave Seattle WA, 98122
Hidden within the Tavern Law is a secret place for people who make reservations and offer the secret password. An authentic 20’s style décor takes visitors back to another era. The Tavern Law provides the eats, but don’t bother looking for a cocktail menu, there isn’t one. Instead, tell the bartender what you like and watch as he or she carefully crafts a drink that won’t be a secret for long.

Bathtub Gin Co.
2205 2nd Seattle WA, 98121
If you can find the unmarked door in the alley, you’ll be able to gain access to a place offering classic décor and cocktails you won’t forget. They offer an extensive whiskey menu, craft cocktails, beer, wine, and, of course, gin. Limited seating and a single bathroom makes this place incredibly cozy, but not a “camp for the evening” spot.
