Makers and Kilts and Crepes, Oh My!

Makers and Kilts and Crepes, Oh My!

March may be traditionally the month of the Irish, but the weekend of March 22 and 23 holds more than just a pot of gold. If your Seattle vacation falls over this weekend you’re in for a real treat. If not, you may want to book an impromptu getaway now.

Seattle Maker Faire
Saturday March 22 and Sunday March 23 – 10am to 5pm at the Seattle Center
Over the past few years the charmingly mad scientists at MAKE: magazine have piqued the imagination of all ages by spawning a series of Maker Faires throughout the country. If you love science, technology, robots, or are just waiting for the hoverboard to be invented, it’s a don’t-miss event. The celebration of learning, creation, and knowledge is perfect for the whole family.

Exhibits are created by both professionals and amateurs from all around the Pacific Northwest, and hands-on participation is encouraged. While the Maker Faire is ideal for all ages, younger inventors will need supervision as some of the exhibits may have small parts or deal with concepts such as electricity. Tip: Historically Sundays are less crowded than Saturdays, allowing for more time in the workshops.

51st Annual Tartan Ball
Saturday March 22 – 7:30pm at the Puyallup Fairgrounds
A dressy affair, this is the ideal opportunity to be part of Seattle’s rich Scottish culture. Described as being like a wedding without the bride and groom, this event is a soiree worthy of royalty. With traditional music and dance featuring the Clan Gordon Pipe Band, you’ll be steeped in the ways of the Scots in no time. You don’t have to wear a kilt, but it is the perfect opportunity to don a tartan. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and tables for up to 10 people may be reserved. Come ready to imbibe, as the open bar will surely feature some of the best scotch around.
