Programs That Cultivate Creativity

Museum of Pop Culture Seattle offers a series of programs designed to inspire and encourage budding musicians, science fiction writers, creators. The recent Seattle Mini Maker Faire celebrated makers of all kinds, from tech innovators to crafters, authors, and tinkerers, reminding us that the creative ability to make is written in our DNA.

The Residency, a 2018 program for youth development through hip-hop, supported Seattle’s rising young hip hop talent. Partnering with Arts Corps and Grammy Award winning artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, MoPOP offered a four-week intensive artist residency program focusing on creative songwriting, performance techniques, and beat productions. The youth participants, aged 16-19, had the opportunity to record an EP of their original music in a professional sound studio, and to perform at MoPOP’s Sky Church.

Since 2013, the Museum of Pop Culture Seattle has sponsored a youth science-fiction and fantasy short story contest. Submissions are judged by a panel consisting of MoPOP curators, professional writers, and Seattle community leaders, and first, second, and third place prizes are awarded for three age groups: grade 3-5, grade 6-8, and grade 9-12. Write Out of this World encourages young writers and offers and outlet for their creativity.

MoPOP educates and supports Seattle’s community of artists and makers through these programs and many more.
